How to Convert PDF to Word for Free
PDFs are built to look the same everywhere, which is exactly why they're painful to edit. If you need to fix a typo, update a figure, or reuse a paragraph from a PDF, converting it to Word first is usually the fastest path.
How to convert a PDF to Word
- Open the PDF to Word tool.
- Upload the PDF you want to edit.
- Click Convert.
- Download the .docx file and open it in Word (or any compatible editor).
What converts cleanly, and what doesn't
Text, headings, and straightforward single-column layouts convert well — the words and structure carry over accurately. Documents with multiple columns, heavy graphic design, or text wrapped tightly around images tend to need some manual cleanup after conversion, because Word's layout model doesn't map onto a PDF's fixed positioning exactly.
Scanned PDFs are a special case
A scanned document is really just a picture of a page — there's no underlying text to convert. If you try to convert a scan directly, you'll get a Word document with no editable text in it. Run OCR on the scan first, which adds a real text layer, and then convert to Word.
Going the other direction
If you're starting from a Word document and need a PDF instead — for something you want to send that shouldn't be easily edited — a Word to PDF converter does the reverse conversion.
