How to Unlock a PDF and Remove Its Password
A password on a PDF makes sense while a document is sensitive. Once it's no longer needed — a statement you keep for your own records, a contract that's now public — typing the password every time you open it is just friction.
What unlocking does
The Unlock PDF tool removes password protection from a document you already have the password for. Only the password requirement is removed; the page content is unchanged, so the unlocked file is otherwise identical to the original.
How to unlock a PDF
- Open the Unlock PDF tool and upload the password-protected file.
- Enter the current password.
- Download the unlocked PDF.
What it can't do
You need the existing password. This tool removes protection you already have access to — it doesn't bypass or crack passwords you don't know, and it isn't meant to. Password protection works by encrypting the file's contents, which is why a lost password can't simply be worked around. If you've forgotten a password, the person or system that created the file is the place to start.
Only unlock what you should
Passwords often exist for good reasons. Remove one only from documents that are yours, or that you've been given permission to share openly, and keep a locked copy if the file still contains anything sensitive. If you later want protection back, you can add a new password with the Protect PDF tool.
