How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
"See page 14" only helps if the pages are numbered. For reports, contracts, manuals, and printed handouts, page numbers make it easy to find a section, refer to it in an email, or put a dropped stack of paper back in order.
How to add page numbers
- Open the Add Page Numbers tool and upload your PDF.
- Choose where the numbers should appear, such as bottom-center or top-right.
- Set the starting number.
- Download the numbered PDF.
Choosing a position
Bottom-center is the most common choice and suits most documents. A top or outer corner is easier to spot when someone is flipping through a printed copy. Whichever you pick, check that the number won't sit on top of an existing footer or letterhead.
Why you might not start at 1
The starting number doesn't have to be 1. That's useful when a document continues from another, such as a second volume or an appendix sent separately, or when you want the numbering to line up with a printed table of contents.
Do it last
Add page numbers after you've finished merging, splitting, or reordering the document. If you add or remove pages afterwards, the numbers won't match anymore and you'll have to number it again.
